Medicare Part D Enrollment Event to Be Held in Burns Flat

The South Western Oklahoma Development Authority Area Agency on Aging (SWODA AAA) is hosting a Medicare Part D enrollment event along with the Oklahoma Senior Health Insurance Counseling Program (SHIP) on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the South Western Oklahoma Development Authority, 420 Sooner Dr., Burns Flat, OK. Ombudsman Presentations Available on a Variety of Topics

South Western Oklahoma Development Authority Area Agency on Aging (SWODA AAA) ombudsman supervisors, Christi Christian, RN, and Samantha Lankford-Jones have begun to provide presentations to interested people/groups in areas of caregiving and respite in addition to the ombudsman program, resident rights and abuse and neglect. Ombudsman supervisors welcome the opportunity to present to family councils, caregiver support groups, senior centers and civic organizations as well as other interested parties. The first of several planned community sharing opportunities for caregivers and family members of nursing home residents to come together to gain support and information has been scheduled for Thursday, October 28, 2010, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place on south Highway 6 in Elk City. Presentations are free of charge, open to the public and may be requested for any area or group by emailing christi@swoda.org or sjones@swoda.org or calling (580) 821-0153 or (580) 821-4068.

No Cost Flu Shots Covered by Medicare Available Now

The South Western Oklahoma Development Authority Area Agency on Aging (SWODA AAA) would like to remind older adults that Medicare covers the seasonal and H1N1 flu shots with no out of pocket costs for people covered by Medicare. The SWODA AAA urges all seniors to take advantage of opportunities to be immunized as flu season continues during the coming months. Each year nearly 30 percent of older Americans – and a higher percent of minorities – are not immunized against seasonal influenza. Older adults are at higher risk for complications from the flu, and approximately 36,000 (mostly elderly) die from the flu and its complications each year.  Read the rest of this entry »

SWODA Awards CENA Funds

Community Expansion of Nutritional Assistance (CENA) grants were awarded by the South Western Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) Board of Trustees in September to area senior citizens centers, cities, towns and counties. This grant is funded by the State of Oklahoma through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. Application was made through the SWODA Aging Services department.
